What's the secret to making money with Google's AdSense program you say? Its easy.

You only need to know about AdSense:

revenue = clicks * average rate per click

This tells you all you need to know to make money on AdSense. Want to earn more with AdSense? The formula tells you to either:

1) Increase clicks, and/or 2) Increase the average rate per click

Of course it's best if both go up, but it may be hard to focus on both. Of course it's an obvious formula, but common sense nearly always pays of. Well, in this business it does.

Increase Adsense clicks - increase traffic

Increasing the number of times the ads are clicked is like kicking an open door. You can either :

1. Increase site traffic, and/or

2. Adjust the ads to get a better click-rate

If you've read some articles on this topic, getting traffic is hard and it will take time. Make sure to have good content. If what you have is useful and unique content, get your site to rank highly in search engine rankings using the right keywords and meta data. So, just standard search engine optimization techniques.

And you can:

1. Publish on other sites, with links back to your site.

2. Participate in forums related to your site. The key is to add value, not just post messages promoting your site.

3. Include a link to your site in signatures (forum posts).

4. Comment on other people's blogs, try link back to yours.

5. List your site in relevant directories.
 

Increase rate per click - adjust the ads

1. Choose the best AdSense ad formats
Google says "If positioned well, these ad formats can increase your earnings significantly. The formats we've found to be the most effective are the 336x280 Large Rectangle, the 300x250 Medium Rectangle, and the 160x600 Wide Skyscraper."

2. Position ads to make them more noticeable. You may have heard about the heat map (see https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/static.py?page=tips.html ).

3. I change the ad colors either to make them blend in with site and content. But depending on your site it may be best to have the ads stand out. Whatever you do, don't leave them as is.

Content targeting is writing content using keywords to target the higher-paying Adwords associated. So you have to figure out which keyword variations for your topic pay more. Be sure to check for the specialized variations and phrases which pay more than the "generic" terms. Make sure the keyword density in your content favors the higher-paying keyword variations. To reduce the occurrence of lower-paying ads, consider these strategies: 1. Use AdSense's mechanisms to filter out the ads that you don't want. 2. Show fewer ads on a page. The fewer ads you show, the more the higher-paying ads get displayed and clicked. You may also display others' ads and get some money there.

As you can see, only common sense involved to increase your AdSense revenue. The AdSense formula is easy to understand but it may take time to apply the formula, just like in real life.
