Some More Traffic Building Hints

Once you got a site running, content in place, figured out the interaction model, you're linked up on adsense and affiliate programs... you need visitors to your site. In other articles you may learn about the backound of getting more search engine traffic (SEO optimization). This is about where you can add your site so you get that higher pagerank.

1.Digg.com

Getting an article referred on Digg.com is really quite easy. If you've never done any digging, just take the following steps:
1) register your new Digg account here. As an alternative you may also login with your Facebook account. On the page you can choose that option, then choose a username. A few clicks and you're signed up.
2) So anytime you want to add your content click on the "submit new" button once logged in or go here. Please do read the guidelines and voila, it says: Yes, you can submit your own content to Digg.
3) Enter the URL where you want people to find your article (the whole link, not website's homepage) and indicate what kind of content it is (today I could choose between "News Article", "Video" and "Image") and click the continue-button. Easy right?
...The next few seconds Digg does some checks. They for instance want to check if the story is already on Digg. If they think it is, you're asked to consider Digging the other article(s) instead of adding yours. If you click "my story has no duplicates" you get the screen where you may comment on the article...
4) Next you need to think of 60 characters as a title for your article, and you have 350 for the description. I like the way Digg does the work for you by suggesting a proper title and description. But as always its better to tweak it.
Don't take things for granted but think what you can do to optimize the outcome. If there are pictures in the article you may select one as thumbnail and next choose a topic from the list.
5) Now take a look at the preview, fill in the Captcha and click the "Submit Story" button.

When submitting your content keep in mind that most of the time, the Internet is fair. If your content is splendid, it is rewarding to have others read and comment. On the other hand, if you content isn't great, please take some more time. There's quite some rubbish out there already.

As the Digg.com site is being searched and indexed all the time, it won't take long before your site is linked on Digg. Your rewards: your site gets a backlink which is a bonus for your pagerank and your site will be indexed by Google, Microsoft and maybe some other search engines.

2. Stumbleupon.com

The pagerank idea is, the more links you have from other sites, the higher your PR will be. Now Stumbleupon is another great way to let other users (both real people and the search engine spiders) know you're alive. In the long run, you may also expect more traffic because people can "follow" you. As for the difference with Digg I quote another user "Unlike Digg or services similar to Digg, you either have to be Super Digg Users or have already established website to land on front page right? SU does not judge people by how famous they are but they judge you by what you shared with others and to be honest I LOVE THAT about SU."

The steps :
1) Sign up here. Stumbleupon (SU) does ask some more questions, but those are to determine what content may be of best interest.
2) You'll notice that, once you've logged in, SU has a list of webpages "Recommended for you". Now wouldn't it be great if your page was listed? Maybe I'll delve into it another time. For now it's just the link and SEO we're after. So you click the tab "Favourites" and add your page by clicking the "Add a site" button.
3) Next you add the page in the "URL" field and do a review of your content. Please notice this is something different from a description. Next click "Add a site" below the text you've just entered.
4) Now before you start recommending your article, select language and add a topic. They also want you to mark the article as a safe-for-work or not (adult content). Where Digg does some work to prepare a description, Stumbleupon suggests a category. Click the "Submit" button when you're done.

3.Reddit.com

inadsense - reddit logo

First thing is, make sure you type in www.reddit.com or your browser may not find the website at all.
Next, it's basically the same: get an account, log in and submit a reference to your article.
Some say it's best if you add your link when it's less busy, so it may get attention longer. If that's your purpose, you know what to do... If you're simply going after the link, than just submit anytime you feel like it.
You must choose a category (reddit) related to your content, and best think about it a bit, before you click submit.
Once you've sorted that out, write a comment on the article and press "Save". Next, your article is linked as the first in the category you've figured out. Always remember: people will look at your link and the description. If they are interested they will take a look. If they like your site they may return or even submit to your newsletter. Keep it in mind when writing content. Don't be angry if this doesn't pay off immediately. It may take time before your efforts (and patience) are rewarded.

Of course, link exchange is also a good thing. But be careful and check the links on your site on a regular basis. They may just stop any day without notice, and the next owner may use it for malware or something else Google doesn't like. And linking to the wrong sites will do you harm (or at least, your rank).

Commenting for Traffic Generation

As the owner of a website, you have unique voice in the Internet world. On your site you publish meaningful content. It is there to be read. In order to maximize your exposure (at this moment Internetworldstats.com tells me there are about 2 billion users) you need a high ranking in search engines. This is related to a high pagerank. And the pagerank is related to the number of inbound links to your site. If it all works out, you will get traffic.

To increase traffic and adsense revenue

Now some will be willing to place a link to your site just because you asked nice. But there’s some things you can do as well.
Of course there are quite some regularly indexed sites where you can freely place a link to your content. Take for instance Digg or Stumbleupon. But you can do more by commenting on other people’s articles and sites. In most cases you have to leave a name and email address and you can put a link to your website there as well. And that will be an inbound link when indexed. But let’s take it a little deeper.
People comment on blogs for many reasons. Most just want to express their opinion of what they’ve just read, on the topic, or maybe the other comments. Some others will comment to give positive/negative feedback or advice. And of course some people just want attention. Now if you did it for the SEO and Social Media benefits, would that be the wrong reason?
So if it's just for a quick link  you add your site's name in the box. And don't expect anything but the search engine spider picking it up. If you write a solid review and can relate to content on your site, there's more viewers. If they decide to click the link, they may want to come back for more later. It's all about the content...

To Be Heard

One very good reason to comment is to tell 2 billion people how you feel on a subject, and have your voice heard. Did you ever have an opinion on a political or news post, or a scandal with a celebrity involved? It can be fun to post your comments on a blog and see the reactions. One of the great things about blogs and Social Media is that they are not a one way conversation, you can actually get involved.

To Make A Name

An important use of commenting on blogs is to add to your creditability and establish your name as an expert. Are you are an expert in security and safety? Start commenting on others blogs concerning security and conflict management, evasive driving, surveillance, first aid you can let the community see your knowledge. Then have your audience come back for more if they decide to like or value your opinions.
Some will only post on their own blogs and post their own links on twitter. Commenting on other’s blogs makes you a part of bigger whole, and shows that you’re not only thinking about yourself.

Unique content in your blog

I think I wrote about it in half the pages on this site (or else should have done): create your own content, be unique!

A regular internet user doesn't likely visit one site to gather information on a topicin fact, they may be just like you. Startup Google, select some 5 of out the first 10 (especially if there's some site they already know) and read.
I think one of the most damaging things is, if the user sees the same content on different blogs.
Now I'm not talking about stock market share prices. This is about whole articles that are simply stolen
 from or maybe by you.

Copyscape

Some weeks ago I ran into a tool called Copyscape. It's been out there for a while of course, but I thought I'd best share it with you.
If you value your content, this is a great tool to see whether the content of your website is used elsewhere. That may not only be quite unethical. Looking at it from an SEO perspective, if your content is on other websites  that pose a threat to your search engine ranking and traffic building efforts. Search engines have filters to check if the content of a page is original. If not, the site is less interesting (just as in real life).

Copyscape checks the web to find copies of your site and give you, if any, gives you the location of the copies. The first few are free. But that's not all. If you get a hit, you can look at the percentage of copied content and you get a nice view of what's been copied. Here's an example of a page I ran into:

Now of course, I did some checking on a few of my own Adsense related pages as well and discovered this:

To my surprise I got a hit on content I thought I wrote myself. After the initial shock I was looking a bit deeper and noticed the copied piece to be the Google PageRank formula.
It's true, I copied a few lines from the Google founders trying to explain what PageRank is all about. And I wasn't the only one...

Anyway: I really like this little tool.

Traffic Building Hints

No online success exists without traffic to your site. It is really an open door, but nevertheless too many people only care for design and functionality of their site. Maybe it is they spend too much time looking around. I see so many requests for copying sites, implementing a specific design, like “I want you to build a website for me, it has to look like …”.
You may have the most beautiful site with the most practical info or products. No traffic and it’s just another waste of time and money. So I put up some hints for your convenience, going from basic to advanced.

1. First and foremost - search engine traffic

Traffic originated from search engines is not only absolutely free, it is targeted as well. People every day, every second are typing in keywords in Google, keywords related to your site’s content. Looking what you have to offer. If you value your users, you’d better make sure the search engine can find you.

2. HTML structure and tags

A website is not just about putting content online. The way it is structured is very important. However basic it may be, too many sites lack a decent HTML structure.

Every decent page should be built up in two parts from HTML perspective. There’s a header section and then the body. Search engines will look first at the header section to get an idea what the body is about. That information is stored in tags, something like this:

Header

<head>
<title> inadsense.nl = latest seo hints for increasing adsense revenue</title>
<meta name=”description” content=”All about increasing Google adsense revenue”>
<meta name=”keywords” content=” adsense revenue, seo hints, online marketing”>
<meta name="author" content="John Doe, jdoe@inadsense.nl">
<meta name="generator" content="Inadsense.nl - CMS" />
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow" />
</head>

Body

There are relevant tags in the body as well.
When evaluating your page, search engines are looking for headlines in the main body text. The tags they are looking for are:  <h1>, <h2>, <h3>. As you could guess, the most important headline is <h1>, then <h2> then <h3>. Please note that, while the meta-tags in the header section are not shown in the browser screen (except for the title of course), the headline tags are displayed.

<h1>Use Google Adsense to increase site revenue</h1>

is an example.
